Why is log(-527) not able to be evaluated

Dave was trying to use a calculator to evaluate log(-527)but he kept getting an error message explain why his calculator would not provide a value for log ( -527)

you cannot take the log of a negative number if the base is positive...

for positive base B>0, then B^x >0 for any x ..

if x>0 ,then surely B^x is positive

if x=0, then b^x = b^0 = 1 > 0

if x<0, then b^x = 1/b^(-x) >0 is a proper fraction but still positive

so the RANGE exponential is positive (which is the domain

of the LOG function) is positive reals..
