The ancient Greeks believed in the 12 gods, with Zeus being the most important one. They lived on Mount Olympus. Each one represented a specific skill or trade. As a matter of fact, there was a contest between the Goddess Athena and the God Poseidon as to whom the capital of Greece would be named after, and Athena won, thereby giving the city the name Athens..
Although most religions today believe in one God, whether it's in Jesus Christ, Budda, or Allah, the idea of worshiping something greater than ourselves is still the main reason why people choose to believe. Worshiping, revering, honoring and leaning on someone whom they look to for help, guidance, and comfort is still universal and perennial.
