There are multiple approaches to this question. Therefore, I will list some of the main characteristics of the Anglo-Saxon Epic Ballard/Poems (such as Beowulf).
Major Themes:
- Universal themes (good vs. evil; man vs. nature)
- good of the community/kingdom/king vs. the individual
Characteristics of the Hero:
- Deals with the fate of his nation/country/people
- idealistic in terms of his character (strength, courage, determination, etc)
- model of the ideal warrior
- brave/courageous especially when faced with impossible odds
- intelligent (is often able to "out think" the antagonist")
- not concerned with romantic aspect (different from King Arthur Legends for example)
Characteristics of the Antagonist (or villain depending)
- often a part of the supernatural
- threatens the safety of the people/king
- often defeated by the hero in a great battle
Structure of the Ballard:
- Oral tradition/story telling
- teach community values/life lessons
- not rhyming
- strong use of metaphors
- serious tone/word choice
