asked 04/10/20Vector question.
Problem: A plane is set to head due east at 300 mph, but it is being pushed off course by a crosswind blowing south at 60mph. At 9AM the plane is located at point A(10,70) and at 10AM the plane is located at point C(310,10). At what direction and speed is the plane traveling?
300
A(10,70) -------------------------------> B
↓60
C(310,10)
Attempt:
What I know:
velocity of plane + velocity of the wind = actual speed of the plane
Point C seems to be the sum of point A affected by the wind.
Therefore, I think I need to find the magnitude and direction of vector .

Since the vectors are at right angle you can use Pythagoras to determine the magnitude.
Use any trigonometric function to determine direction, m∠BAC.

In other words, magnitude = sqrt(300^2 + 60^2) ? Direction = arctan (60/300) ? Hmm... this whole unit was on matrices so I'm skeptical.04/10/20
