Acceleration is the change in velocity over time, and when acceleration is uniform it can be determined by calculating Δv/Δt.
In this example, Δv = v2 - v1 = 5m/s - 0m/s = 5m/s
v1 is 0 because the ball started "at rest."
And Δt = t2 - t1 = 10s - 0s = 10s
So, a = Δv/Δt = (5 m/s) / (10 s) = 0.5 m/s2
