Solve this math problem: Tom has 10 pennies, Ed and Ned have 46 pennies, Ned and Fred have 36 pennies, how many more pennies does Ed have then Tom

It looks like we can break this up into a few different equations
T=10
E+N = 46
N+F = 40
E+F = 36
And we want to know E, so that we can find what E - 10 equals.
I would start by subtracting the equations
E+N = 46
and
N+F = 40
to get
E - F = 6
Once we have that, we can add it to
E + F =36
The Fs cancel, leaving
2E = 42
Thus E = 21.
Subtract Tom's 10, and you're there.
