Two ships, 1600ft apart detect a submarine between them below the waters surface. The angle of depression from the first ship to the submarine is 40°. In the angle of depression from the second ship to the submarine is 28°

How deep below the water’s surface is the submarine?

tan 40 = h/(1600-x) --> h = tan 40 * (1600-x)

tan 28 = h/x --> h = x ( tan 28)

tan 40 ( 1600 - x) = tan 28 * x

tan 40 * 1600 - tan 40 *x- tan 28*x = 0

tan 40 * 1600 - x( tan 40 + tan 28) = 0

tan 40*1600/ (tan 40 + tan 28) = x
