The media's role is to gather information from as many sources available to them as possible and to share that information with the public (people, citizens). Governments, people, and other actors are the participants in a public event, and the media (journalists, news organizations, publishers, etc.) is essentially a third party observer that is there to record the events and present them to the public, how they choose to shape that information is of course up to them.
