The Garden of Forking Paths is about the metaphysics of time. The story is set in World War I. Tsun is a Chinese spy working for the German army. He has escaped from the Captain Richard Madden, and decides to go to Dr. Stephen Albert's home. On his way to his house, Tsun daydreams about his ancestor's labyrinth. Ts'ui Pen created a maze that could not be found. Tsun perceives all of time as a labyrinth, viewing himself as an abstract observer outside of time. Dr. Albert discusses Ts'ui Pen's labyrinth with Tsun and tells him that the manuscript is the maze. The story describes different possible futures as if they were different paths through the labyrinth.
