If you have a function g(x) = y, then you give the independent variable x, and get y out. For example, if you do x = 7, then g(x = 7) = 5 = y, so the final point is (5, 7). If you do the inverse of g(x) = y, you get g-1(g(x)) = g-1(y), and because g-1 "undoes" g, you end up with g-1(y) = x, so you put y in and get x out. To finalize it with the example question given, you put y=3 in and get x = 5 out.
