(f ∘ f)(5) can also be written as f(f(5)), which I prefer. It say, first figure out what f(5) is [ f(f(5)) ] then once you have that value plug it into f again.
Using the table, we can see that when x = 5, f(x) = 6 therefore f(5) = 6. Now we take x = 6 and determine f(6). Looking at the table, we see f(6) = 3. Therefore f(f(5)) or (f ∘ f)(5) = 3
