Let x = amount earned by Wilma
x + 4000 = amount earned by Mr Newby
x + (x + 4000) = 47000
2x + 4000 = 47000
2x = 43000
x = $21,500
Wilma earned $21,500 and Mr Newby earned $25,500.

If x is the amount the wife earned, (x+4000) is the amount the husband earned. We know that together they earned 47,000 therefore:
x+(x+4000) = 47000
2x+4000 = 47000
2x = 43000
x = 21500
Thus, the wife earned 21,500 and the husband 25,500

W = what Wilma earned
W + 4000 = what Mr. Newby earned
W + W + 4000 = 47000
2W = 43000
W = 21500

Mr. Newby earned $25, 500
His wife made $21, 500
IF YOU ADD THEM TOGETHER YOU GET $47,000 and there is a $4000 difference between both
