Probably too late for this answer to your question, but maybe it will help someone else. If you need help with any other math homework, just let me know.
They want you to break this problem into tens and ones for the 16, so you first look at the "16" and think "that's a 10 plus a 6". In the first parentheses, you would write the tens part, so (10*40).
Then you look at the ones part, you have a 6 still from the 16, but they already wrote that in the second parentheses for you. So in the second parentheses, you know that you are still having to multiply by 40, so you write (6*40).
Lastly, you have your answers to each of the two parentheses that you'll write after the equal sign: 400 (for the 10*40) + 240 (for the 6*40). Your final answer is 640.
You can check your answer with a calculator by multiplying 16*40 and you'll get 640. Then check your solution of 400+240 and you get 640, so you know you're right!
