What types of reading questions are on the ISEE?

Even if you're a great student & earn terrific grades, be sure to spend some time specifically preparing for the ISEE. You'll become comfortable with the types of vocabulary words they expect you to be familiar with, the variety of reading passages you must understand, and the level of math concepts you should be at ease computing. If you don't prepare, you may be surprised at the level of the questions. For the essay, you should have plenty of experience writing, because you'll only have a half hour to complete your notes, rough draft, & final draft. Be prepared, so you'll be seen as the cream of the the crop!

Critical Reading questions appear on all levels of the ISEE. The Reading section presents you with five to seven passages (depending on the test and level) and questions that follow. The passages will generally cover topics such as history, science, or literature. For each passage, you’ll be asked about the main idea and details presented. You’ll only get points for answering questions correctly, not for reading the text thoroughly, so keep your attention on reading as quickly as possible and answering as many questions as you can.

ISEE reading questions follow the primary reading comprehension types.

Perhaps the most frequent appearing on the majority of the readings is main idea.

Closely related to that is choosing the best title for the reading.

Another common type of question is the inference question - finding evidence to support something not actually stated. The question might read "The author would agree with which of the following?"

There are tone and style questions:" How does the author feel about the topic?" (amused, somber, angry)

Where the reading might appear is often asked: a textbook, a diary, a travel guide, for example
