One city is 130 miles due north of another city. Assuming that the earth is a sphere of radius 3954 miles what is the difference in their latitudes

Ashley, don't make it more complicated that it needs to be! You want to reason and check your results for reasonableness. If 130 miles represented 6 degrees, then the circumference of the earth would be 60 * 130 miles = 7,800 miles; way too small. You can do those calculations in your head! Your failure to apply reason and just starting to apply formulas without appealing to the student's (and your own) common sense is more severe than the arithmetic error! What is s? What is theta? Where does your formula come from? Latitudes are given in degrees, why get involved with radians? Just some thoughts. Peter

I saw my mistake, and fixed it. Questions like these in precalc involve arc length formula, and it is best to solve with those formulas so students are able to learn the concepts. While other ways may be easier, the idea of how to apply the formula must be learned to succeed.
