thief is running at a speed of 6km/h and police is chasing with a speed of 8km/h and the distance between them is 500m

For both the time running is the same. t = d / r

 

For the thief t = d / 6

For the constable t = (d + 0.5) / 8                500 m = 0.5 km

 

d / 6 = (d + 0.5) / 8

8d = 6(d + 0.5)

8d = 6d + 3

2d = 3

d = 1.5

 

The constable catches the thief after 1.5 km.

Assume that the cop catches the thief after time t hrs

 

Distance = speed * time

 

In time t the cop runs 8*t Km

 

Also in time t the thief runs 6*t + 0.5 (convert meters to Km)

 

When the cop catches the thief the distance is same

 

8*t = 6*t + 0.5

2t = 0.5

t = 0.25 hrs

 

So cop catches the thief after 0.25 hrs

 

Distance covered by cop in 0.25 hrs is 8*0.25 = 2 km
