It looks like this question has been posted multiple times, so I'll record this answer on both so they don't get multiple responses. Let's say Darrell = D and Brenda = B. Let's start with the part where Darrell sold 3 fewer than Brenda and ignore the times part for now. This means that Brenda minus 3 is the same as Darrell. To make this mathematical, B-3=D or D+3=B. Remember, whatever you do to one side, you must do to the other, so B-3=D and D+3=B are the same thing written differently.
Now let's factor in the times part. If Darrel sold 3 fewer than 4 times this means that if he sold three more, he would have four times the amount as Brenda. So D= 4B-3 because Darrell sold 4 times the amount of Brenda minus 3. I hope that helped!
