How many tickets of each type were sold?

The attendance at a baseball game was 400 people. Student tickets were $2 and adult tickets were $3. Total ticket sales were $1050. How many tickets of each type were sold?

X + Y = 400       2X + 3Y =$1050

X = 400 - y        2(400 - Y) + 3Y = $1050       800 - 2Y + 3Y = $1050       Y = $1050 - 800   Y = $250

X = 400 - 250    X = 150

Let x=the number of students attended the game

Let y=the number of adults attended the game

 

x+y=400 This is the total number of attendees

2x+3y=1050 This is the total in ticket sales.

 

There's a number of ways to solve this system of equations; I like to use elimination of variable method.

 

Multiply the first equation by -2.

 

-2x-2y=-800

 2x+3y=1050 Add the two equations.

        y=250 Now substitute this into the original first equation and solve for x.

 

x+250=400

  -250  -250

       x=150

 

Therefore, 150 tickets were sold to students, and 250 tickets were sold to adults.

If there were x students, then you collected $2*x in money.

If there were y adults,    then you collected $3 *y in money

 

you have x+y people which must equal 400 people....so x+y=400

You have 2x + 3y dollars which must come to 1050......so 2x+3y=1050.
