There are 3 branches of government described in the Constitution. These are... the legislative branch (Congress passes laws), the judicial branch (the courts interpret laws), and the executive branch (the president enforces laws). They all work together, and check each other's power in a system known as "checks and balances".
However, it is sometimes argued (mostly unofficially) that there might be a "4th branch" of government. Sometimes this is referred to as bureaucracy. It is also interchangeable with the press, interest groups, U.S. intelligence/security agencies, the people, etc.
