Excesses of this mineral can affect the brain and cause neurotoxicity?
Manganese is an essential micronutrient since the body needs it to function normally. It is a mineral found in many foods including nuts, legumes, whole grains and dark leafy vegetables. Manganese is also found in the environment in places such as rocks and soils and as combustible byproducts.
Some people take manganese supplements for manganese deficiency conditions such as anemia, PMS, or osteoporosis. Some workers in the construction, mining or agricultural industries are exposed to manganese in the environment.
Too much manganese in the body can be toxic. Manganese stores are mostly found in the liver and brain allowing toxic levels to cause a neurotixicity called Manganism. Symptoms may mimic parkinson's disease and include trembling, slow movements and in most cases are irreversible.
