So we need an equation to solve our word problem. Anytime we see "a number" we can insert a variable, or to make it easy X. We can further substitute a minus sign for subtracted from (make sure you subtract from the right number, this is tricky!) We can place a multiplication sign for times (order doesn't matter in multiplication) and an = for equals.
So: One subtracted from 12 times a number equals 35
becomes:
12x - 1 = 35 (the trickiest part is to make sure to subtract the one from the 12x and not the other way around).
Now to solve add one to both sides
12x = 36
Divide both sides by 12
x = 3
