Carrie has $10 to spend on a taxi. The taxi charges $0.50 for each mile traveled plus $ 2.40 a trip. If Carrie spends all but $0.10 of her money on a taxi, how many miles did Carrie travel?
OK so you know how much she began and ended with. She started with $10 and ended with 10 cents so she spent $9.90. We know that the base charge for taxi service is $2.40 + $.50 per mile. Since your heading is titled "creating an equation from verbal scenarios" lets set it up as an equation with a variable for the number of miles at $.50 per mile.
2.40 + .50X = 9.90
Now solve for X to see how many miles she went
