So first of all, the total number of shots is 17, so one equation is x + y = 17.
How many points did he score? Well 2x is the number of points he scored from all his 2-point shots, and 3y is the number of points from his 3-point shots. Since his total was 43, that makes another equation: 2x + 3y = 43.
