Amos, Miles, and Henry, three boys that always associated with Julian, appeared in the forest when Jack and Auggie snuck away from the movie and went to go to the bathroom. While Auggie and Jack had smoothed things over by then with their friendship, Amos, Miles, and Henry are infamous for being Julian's "crew". This creates the perfect opportunity, when the boys are on the camping trip, and Amos, Miles, and Henry come back for Jack and Auggie. In a nutshell, the boys were in the woods - somewhere that they were not supposed to be -- and a couple of seventh graders ended up finding Jack and Auggie, saying terrible things to Auggie, ultimately resulting in a fist fight. As the altercation occurs, Auggie loses his hearing aids, and the fear and anxiety of helplessness sets in.
Auggie was standing up for himself against these bigger kids, and the three boys that would normally make fun of Auggie, just as Julian does, show a change of heart. On page 270, Amos looks at Auggie and says, "It was cool how you stood your ground, little dude (Palacio). He then proceeds to high-five him, and Auggie is is elated. This experience, this sense of belonging and camaraderie that Auggie failed to feel for so long, proves that Auggie is accepted. He is one of the boys. Best of all, he shows a vulnerability when he breaks down minutes later, as the hearing aid loss finally set in.
