Why shouldn't gravity be a force?

Why shouldn't gravity be a force? I am interested to know the reasons why we shouldn't treat gravity as a force in, for example, General Relativity. Won't we be able to model it accurately by treating it as only a force?

The counter-question: Why SHOULD we treat it as a force?? In classical physics, we have the force OF gravity, which is determined by mass and distance......therefore we can say that gravity causes force or, if you prefer: mass causes force.
