Theory developed by James Maxwell that combines the four laws of electricity and magnetism into a more complete understanding that predicted the existence of electromagnetic waves (light and radio waves). This lead to the development of radio transmission, the basis of wireless communication.
The four laws were:
Electric charges produce electric fields (Gauss' law).
Electric field are produced by changing magnetic fields (Faraday's law).
Magnetic fields are produced by an electric current (Ampere's law).
A single magnetic charge cannot exist (no magnetic monopoles).
Maxwell modified Ampere's law to include displacement of electric charge. That new equation plus Faraday's law meant there must be electromagnetic waves that propagated at the speed of light.
