Two trains are 800 miles apart. They start at 9:00 a.m. traveling toward each other. One train travels at an average rate of 45 miles per hour and the other train travels at an average rate of 55 miles. At what time do the trains meet?

45t + 55t = 800

100t = 800

t = 8

in 8 hours, they will travel 45*8 + 55*8 = 360 + 440 = 800 miles.
