COBOL is still widely used in corporation and government applications. Additionally, there are now desktop varieties of the language such as MicroFocus COBOL and COBOL.NET. If you don't want to pony up for one of those IDEs, there are a number of free COBOL compilers available. One good place to look for ratings (and be reasonably sure they don't have malware or the like lurking in them) is to search CNet for 'COBOL compilers'.
