Financial engineering involves valuing and structuring cash flows to meet a particular need (usually for a banking client).
Econometrics is branch of statitistics where data is analyzed to confirm or refute economic hypothoses. there is actaully more to both than that but it is a good start. I am a trained econometrician who has spent many years in Finanial engineering and seldom used economterics in financial engineering
