Getting rid of Whitespace in Inkscape?

Is there a way in Inkscape to set the boundaries of the svg file the way they would be set if you export as a bitmap?I want that there's no whitespace above, beneath, right or left of the object that I select.

To get rid of the white background in Inkscape, go to File and Select Document Properties. There will be a Background section. Check the box of the Checkerboard Background option. Now all the white space of the document will be gone.

Note: I tried this out but my version of Inkscape is 1.0. Versions prior to this may vary .
