VLSI stands for "Very Large Scale Integration". It basically means "an awful lot of transistors on a single chip".
It followed "LSI", or "Large Scale Integration" - "a whole bunch of transistors on a single chip". Which itself follow just plain old "Integrated Circuitry" - "a few transistors on a single chip". Before that, there was no integration and systems were built of individual, or discrete, components.
