The word Shia is an Arabic word , also used in Farsi for the people of who are followers of the Shia sect of Islam. On its own it means friends, when it was used first the complete word was Shiaan-e-eAli, friend or followers of Hazrat Ali, the cousin and son in law of the Prophet of Islam
