How can I save a 'tif' and later access it in LR ?

I am an iMac person using LR Classic and have accumulated over 4,000 photos over the past 3+ years, and have ‘developed’ a substantial number of them. I know about exporting as a'tif' to preserve the edits, and have saved them in the same folder [Pictures] as the original. However, the only way that I have discovered to access the tif in LR is to select the ‘add to this catalog’ option. I really don’t want to clutter up the LR Library, but the only other way that I have been able to access the tif is in View finder or PS CC. How can I save the tif and later access it in LR ?

Thanks for your response. I do convert the files to DNG upon import ... what I want to do is save the editing permanently and be able to open the file at some later time in LR for printing, additional editing or some other reason. I don't want to add the tifs to the catalog at the time of export. Doing that would double the size of the catalog. I don't want to have to recreate the original editing by re-processing.

The DNG saves the processing permanently. You don’t have to reprocess. You can re-export it at different sizes and formats. There’s no reason to bring a tiff into LR unless you want to work on it. If all you want is a way to view your tiffs better, use Bridge to view them. You can print from the DNG that is already in LR.

What I’m trying to say is that LR is a dark room program for processing your photos. DNGs are digital negatives. You don’t need to reimport an already processed file into a processing software if your digital negative is still in there. You can print from the digital negative.
