Great question.
The sentence suggests that how we react to certain words depends in very large part on our situation in life.
For instance, if you're just an impartial bystander, and you observe a couple making goo-goo eyes and calling each other "snookums" (or whatever), you probably just want to gag, right?
HOWEVER, if YOU are the one in love, then what would have been a harsh judgment about cliched lovey-dovey talk, can turn around like a boomerang and hit you as totally real and meaningful.
