When you solve equations, you'll have three possible endings:
- You'll get something like b=5, in which case you have the solution. It's always good to go back and check your solution, as in the future you will learn about extraneous solutions that aren't real, but for linear equations, you are typically good to go.
- You'll get something that's just wrong, like 5=-2 This is what they mean by a contradiction, and means there is no solution.
- You'll get a true fact like 4=4. If this happens, you have an identity, or if solving two equations, you'll know it's really the same equation.
