You're absolutely correct, biology is the general study of life, while ecology is a sub-discipline of biology that focuses on the interactions between organisms and their interaction with the environment. The words cannot truly be used interchangeably, but ecology is a part of the larger science of biology. So if you hear people refer to ecology as biology, just know that they're loosely using the term because it is a biological science, but also includes aspects of the non-living world.
