Molly, the domain is defined as any value x can possibly take.
f(x) = (x + 3)/(x2-1)
The only thing you absolutely cannot do is divide by 0. To find out what that would be, all you do is set the denominator to 0 and solve for x:
x2 - 1 = 0
x2 = 1
x = √1
x = ± 1
That means that x cannot equal -1 or 1. All other numbers are included. In interval notation that is shown like this:
(-∞,-1)∪(-1,1)∪(1,∞)
