y=x^2+2x+8

y=-4x

What is the smallest value of Y in the solution set of the system?

Since the expressions on the right are each equal to y, we can set them equal to each other,

→ x² + 2x + 8 = -4x

→ x² + 6x + 8 = 0

→ (x + 4)(x + 2) = 0

→ x = -4 and x = -2.

For x = -4

→ y = 16.

For x = -2

→ y = 8.

y = 8 is the smaller of the two y values.
