Dividing document but preserving croass references.

Question

I need to divide one 1000 page document into four 250 page documents but preserve the cross references. Thus footnote 22 'See p 688' appearing on page 45 would now automatically change to 'See Book 2, page 124.' Or footnote 569 on pg 1029 'See p 45' would automatically change to 'See Book 1, pg 45' Is this possible either in Word or another programme to which I can transfer the 1000 page document.?

Your best bet is probably Adobe InDesign.

Word gets wonky after a few hundred pages. I have published books with extensive footnotes, but these are typically a compilation of articles placed into a single document.

In that case, all of the references are correct, since I am adding them to one continuous document. It appears you are doing this in the other direction.

You could try to embed an Excel worksheet that has these connections at the end of your book, or include it in each book. That way, the hyperlinks will connect to your content.
