I would recommend continuing building your knowledge of HTML5 and CSS3. As there are quite a few changes to the spec since HTML and CSS in its former days. HTML5 and CSS3 are synonymous to the "backbone" of the webpage or app, and Javascript builds functionality on top of that basic skeleton of HTML and CSS. If your major is primarily Information Technology, Javascript and HTML5/CSS3 would most likely be taught concurrently. However, if your degree is more graphics-based, such as the Graphic Design and Media Arts career path, Javascript would be near the end of your course list in the curriculum, as it is quite a bit more complex and advanced than HTML5 and CSS3.
