A wave passing through a material has a frequency of 346*10^12 Hz and a wavelength of 650*10^-9 m. What is the index of refraction of the material? (Please Explain)

wavelength = λ

frequency = f

speed of light in vacuum = c = 3 * 108 m/sec

speed of light in a medium = v

λ = c / f, OR v / f

f = c / λ, OR v / λ, and v = λ * f


v = λ * f = (650 * 10-9) * (346 * 1012) = 2.25 * 108


Finally, the index of refraction, n = v / c
