how do you convert mm to centimetres?...

Hi Michael--

 

If you have a number of millimeters, divide by 10 to to get the number of centimeters.

 

For example: 1,000 millimeters divided by 10 = 100 centimeters.

 

It will really REALLY help to make a metric conversion chart (looks like a place value chart) and practice converting one type of unit to the other.

 

 

Put these headings on top of the columns:

 

Kilo   Hecto  Deka  [Unit, for example "Meter"]   Deci   Centi   Milli

 

Each column on the chart will be either 10 times bigger or 10 times smaller than the column next to it.

 

For example, 100 "medium sized" centimeters will turn into 1,000 "smaller" millimeters (100 x 10), because you need more of something if each one is smaller.

 

and those same 100 "medium sized" centimeters will turn into 10 "larger" decimeters (100 ÷ 10), because you need fewer of something because each one is bigger.

 

Make a chart and practice--believe me, you'll have this mastered very quickly!

Try using dimensional analysis as shown below.  Continue to cross out units from the top and bottom until you get the final desired unit.

 

1 mm l 1 cm    = 0.1 cm

           l 10 mm
