C++ code file extension? .cc vs .cpp?

Question

I have seen C++ code saved as both `.cc` and `.cpp` files. Is there a difference between the two?

I am mainly concerned with programs on Linux systems.

C++ source code which should not be preprocessed.

.cc, .cp, .cxx, .cpp, .c++, .C

C++ source code which must be preprocessed.

So there is no difference in the behavior of gcc for the extensions noted in the second row.
