Geographic Information Systems (GIS): It's A Whole New Challenge
Hi,
The key to a good GIS project is having great data. Without the data, it's difficult to complete any assignment.
- Best to work in your area since familiarity helps with answering questions.
- Each county assessor's office has parcel information. You can download the parcel shapefile (residential), select the land use (residential), recent home sales and calculate property value change.
- Download census data (total population) of an area, identify race percentages and the number of different race cultures in a community (percentages). Show this percentage variation as a chloropeth map.
- Locate the number of hospitals and clinics in a city or large town. Calculate the distance from key residential areas or business areas. Is there an area that looks like it could use a clinic based on population size?
These are just samples depending on the available data. Data can be collected from local assessor's office, U.S. census and if using ESRI products their online atlas data. Good luck!
