About Lisa

Hello! I am a freelance science and history writer, and have been tutoring basic science, basic math (algebra, K-8th grade) and writing since 2005. I have published books and many different articles covering a wide variety of science, history and technical product review topics. I wrote and developed different math, science and writing assignments for K- 8th grade students. It was challenging and allowed me to better understand different approaches to learning. And my own son struggled with writing, history, and math so it's personal for me to make sure students understand their subject material.

From 2006 to 2012, I was a multi-grade math, history and writing tutor for the Bellevue School District in Bellevue, Washington. Whether it was word problems, graphs or calculations I engaged my tutorial students to tackle the problem (in a fun way). If students didn't understand how to tackle an essay question or complete a problem, we broke it down together to grasp the concepts and complete the assignment feeling successful.

ACT and SAT test prep - how you read and understand what they are asking in the question is half the battle.

Everyone learns at a different pace and understanding. And there are different methods of learning. Whether it's math, history, writing, biology, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), or astronomy I engage my student to identify how they can better comprehend, apply and most importantly improve their study skills to understand the content. Just completing a problem, writing a paragraph or reciting back information isn't enough. This same content or application can be presented in different scenarios. My goal is to make sure a student understands how to truly apply their skills and be successful.

And I live and breathe science. Do I know everything about it? No, but that's the challenge! Am I good at finding answers? Yes.

If I can engage your interests to find a difficult subject interesting and less confusing, then we're on our way to current and future success. Please contact me as your tutor, and let's move forward to reach your academic goals. Thanks!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I'm a history buff, which means I enjoy learning tidbits about history. We can learn more about ourselves and others around us by studying history. And American history is full of interesting facts and figures - some good, some not so good.

Astronomy

I have taught general astronomy to students from ages 5 to 95. My children's elementary school had a planetarium so we covered constellations to microgravity, reasons for the seasons to planetary movement. I wrote lessons for K-8th grade students for Science Weekly. And at Bellevue College in Bellevue, Washington I was an astronomy presenter for public and K-12 school events. And there's so much to cover that you never stop learning!

Biology

At UC Davis I was a preveterinarian student and my undergraduate courses covered biology, botany, animal husbandry, zoology, and physiochemistry. I wrote a high school cellular biology iPhone and iPad mobile app on Cellular Biology titled "Cell and Cell Structure". I have written K-6th grade content on biology, and for the Bellevue School District in Bellevue, WA I tutored middle school students on biology.

Botany

At SDSU, my GIS courses require plant identification and habitat location, which require knowledge in botany. At the University of California, Davis, my undergraduate core courses included Botany, Plant Physiology, and Soil Science.

From 2005 to 2012, for Science Weekly I wrote K-6th grade STEM activity newsletters covering different environmental and earth science topics that incorporated botany topics. I created reading, writing, math, science and logic activities.

From 1985 - 1998 as a Senior Real Estate Appraiser for several different firms, I appraised and valued farms, timberland and ranches which required knowledge of botany, plant habitat, agricultural botany and crop growth.
