It's active voice because the subject (author) is the one doing the acting (writing) and the object (essays) is being acted upon:
"the author ... wrote ... several essays ..."
In passive voice, the subject is not performing the action of the verb; typically the subject is being acted upon, rather than the doing the acting:
"several essays ... were written ... by the author ..."
