The null hypothesis (Ho) is ALWAYS then answer to "what would be a 'nothing-burger'? a non-story. Boring." In this case, it would be if there was no difference in sleep hours for all men and all women. So you would write the null hypothesis this way (using M for "mu", w for women and m for men):

Ho: Mw = Mm

The alternate hypothesis is what WOULD be of interest to us as stated in the problem.

Ha: Mw > Mm

**Both may be written in terms of subtraction: Ho: Mw - Mm = 0; Ha: Mw - Mm > 0 or Mm - Mw < 0.

**Note that neither Ho or Ha have an "=" after them.....they are not variables, they are statements. It is the variables that might equal each other or some value, not the statements.

**The comparison in the Ho will always be an "=" with no inequality. This is because we need to use the value in the calculations of test statistic. So you cannot give a range of values in the Ho and then just arbitrarily pick one to use in the formulas. The specific hypothesized value of the parameter must be stated in Ho.
