An aquarium holds 11.54 cubic feet of water, and is 2.7 feet long and 1.8 feet wide. What is it’s depth? Round your answer to the nearest whole number.

The standard formula for the volume of a retangular prism is length (l) x width (w) x height (h) = volume (V). The height would be the equivalent of the depth, so step one is to plug what we know already into the equation.

11.54= 2.7 X 1.8 X H

Step 2: Multiply 2.7 by 1.8 and rewrite the equation.

11.45=4.86 X H

Step 3: Step three is to solve for the variable H. In order to do this, we have use the inverse of multiplication. In an equation, it is important to remember that whatever you do to one side, you must also do to the second side. Therefore, we divide both sides by 4.86.

2.37= H

The depth is 2.37 feet.

Step 4: Reread the question. The question asks you to round the answer to the nearest whole number. Circle your whole number and underline the digit one place to the right. You've underlined the digit 3. The rules for rounding are 5 or more, raise the score, 4 or less, let it rest. Since 3 is less than five, we round down to 2, so the answer is:

And since they want you to round to the nearest whole number, 2.37 rounds to 2 feet deep.
