Hi, excellent question. Living in LA for 2 decades, working as a musician, and a composing music for several independent films, I would be glad to answer your questions:
- I would highly recommend studying music theory. It doesn't have to be the traditional harmony but modern harmony, learning scales, chord progressions and how they are connected which I find it really fun, and important.
- Yes! Knowing a DAW is a must these days. John Williams does not have to but pretty much everyone else does :) Most common DAW among TV and Film composers are DP, Pro Tools, Logic X and Cubase
- Certainly! There are many ways to put your ideas to work, however having some skills on Piano/Keys will make you start composing and recording your ideas quicker comparing with Piano Roll editor.
I hope this is helpful for you.
