Elections for the U.S. Senate are held every two years with one-third of the Senators up for re-election at a time. (They serve 6 year terms.) The primary elections to select the final candidates for the general election are held at different times, depending on the state. The top candidates in the primaries (generally one from each party, except in states with a top-two primary system like California and Washington where only the top two vote-getting candidates in the primary advance to the general election, regardless of party affiliation.) The final Senate elections occur at the general election on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November in even numbered years.
